ELA and Reading - The week of October 13-17

I cannot believe we are already in mid October.  Times files when you are having fun.  Just a few reminders:

  • The AR party is Friday, October 17th from 10:30-11:30.  If students met or exceeded their 1st nine week goal, then they will be allowed to bring in board games (no electronic games), and a special treat (canned soft drink and a snack) and take outside for an extended recess.  Those who did not meet their goal will stay inside and read.
  • BIG BASH is also Friday, October 17th from 1:00-2:00.  Students who earned 14 or less signatures on their behavior cards this nine weeks will be going outside.  They can bring up to $5.00 to purchase snacks during this time.  Students who have not earned BIG BASH will stay inside.
  • We will go to the Book Fair as a class on Monday, October 20th. The grand event is Wednesday, October 22nd.  Please make plans to attend.  This is a great way to build your child's home library.
In ELA we will continue to work on narratives.  We have been learning strategies to make our writing more interesting.  Using strategies such as Show Don't Tell, Grabber Leads, Razzle Dazzle Words are just a few ways to build their writing skills.  We will continue adding more strategies to our "bag of writing tricks".  Students should continue practicing being able to identify the different parts of speech in sentences.

In Reading, we will begin our figurative language unit of study this morning.  Students will learn about metaphors, similes, alliterations, idioms, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia.  This is a very fun unit and I think they will enjoy it.  The roots this week will be introduce on Tuesday, October 14th.  We will test on the following words Wednesday, October 22nd.  Please have your child study using Quizlet (link at the bottom of this post) and completing the activities sent home for homework.  The root is dict - meaning "to say".
  • predict
  • dictionary
  • dictator
  • dictate
  • addict
  • contradict
  • verdict

  • vindicate
  • predicament
