I hope that you have had a great
summer and are ready to come back to school to renew friendships, make new
friends, and learn! There will be many new adventures this year in 5th
grade math, science, and social studies.
Routine homework, upcoming tests, announcements,
and study aides (websites and quizlets) will be posted on this blog. Be sure to
also show your parents how to access this school information along with
PowerSchool so they can help monitor your learning.
School will start at 7:30am with the
tardy bell ringing at 7:45am. You should be in your homeroom class with your
materials for 1st block before the tardy bell. We will begin your 1st
Block classes promptly at 7:50am and you will go to your 2nd Block
classes at 9:40am. Recess will be right before lunch and you will have activity
and extension the last two periods of the day.
As a 5th grader, we
expect you to bring your class materials with you every day. This will include
pencils, notebooks/folders, homework, textbooks, glue sticks, and/or scissors
as requested at our classroom doors. You will be able to change to your 2nd
Block classroom books and supplies when you change to those classes.
We will expect you to carry your
Agenda with you everywhere you go and will expect you to take care of it. This
is a well-made organization tool and should be in good shape at the end of the
year. Assignments are to be copied in each classroom as written as requested by
each teacher. Your Behavior Card will be attached to your agenda as requested
by your teacher. This tool helps you and your parents monitor your behavior as
well as homework/classwork completion throughout the year.
Friday folders will again be sent
home with you every week and should be returned by Tuesday morning each week.
This is just another tool that we use to help you and your parents monitor the
progress that you are making throughout the year.
We will be alternating the days
that we teach Science and Social Studies. On Mondays and Tuesdays you will have
Science class; on Wednesdays and Thursdays you will attend Social Studies.
Friday will be a flexible day and will be used for assessments or additional
class time.
Daily preparation for tests at home
will be a very important part of your homework every night. You should spend
about 10 minutes every night reviewing your notes, vocabulary, and/or handouts.
It is essential to develop good study skills now so that you are prepared for
assessments on a daily basis not only now, but throughout school.
Now, have you ever wanted to know
what teachers do in the summer? Some like to spend time relaxing at the pool,
others visit family members that live far away, and still others spend time
cleaning their house, working in the yard, and playing with their children.
However, there are a few (usually science teachers) that also tend to help
teach or take courses where they have the opportunity to explore the coastal
environment up close. I am one of these teachers! The pictures below will give
you an idea of what I did over the summer. Photos courtesy of David Nadeau, Miami Florida.
